What is automatic writing?Automatic writing is a fantastic writing exercise, particularly if you’ve ever suffered from writer’s block. Automatic writing is an effective and efficient method to keep the words flowing and your work moving forward.Writers block occurs when a writer begins to doubt the words flowing from their pen or appearing on the screen. Self- criticism can happen in an instant: one second you are happy with what your’re writing, and in the next you can’t stand it. Every word is more awful than the next. When doubt creeps in, the easiest and the worst thing a writer can do is to stop writing. It’s easy to put the pen down and move the fingers away from the keyboard. It seems to make the most sense; if you stop writing, then you stop the awful product. The thing is that once you stop writing, it can be quite difficult to start again. The fear of what you’ll produce lingers on. One second of not writing can lead to a day, a week, a month and your project officially stalls. Writers can use automatic writing to prevent the urge to put the pen down and pull the fingers away from the keyboard. The purpose of the exercise is to keep writing and not stop, whatever the quality of the content. The exercise unfolds as follows: Decide on a topic, issue, headline, give yourself something to write about. This way you don’t find yourself staring at a blank page before you’ve even begun.Give yourself a time limit. The boundary of the time limit is important. That way there is a beginning and an end. Sometimes knowing there is an end point is all you need to unlock the brain, especially if you’re in the throws of writers block. Start with a one minute time limit, and work your way up to ten or fifteen. Then you begin to write. Pen to paper, fingers to keyboard. Once you start the exercise, don’t stop writing till the time limit is up. If you get stuck, write about being stuck. Write the same sentence over and over again. The same word. Anything to keep moving. Anything to fill the time limit. It’s important not to evaluate the content. This exercise is not about content. It’s about the act of writing and fighting against self-criticism. To get into the habit of continuous writing. To override the instinct to stop. To keep the channel from the brain and imagination to output open. The more you practise automatic writing, the easier it will be to push on when you get stuck in the middle of a project. And that in the end is the ultimate goal: the writer must keep writing.
